BBL Treatment: What to Expect, Day by Day

Most people come to us with the same two questions about BBL: what does it actually feel like, and what will my skin look like afterward? Fair questions. Knowing what to expect makes the whole thing easier, so here’s the full picture, from your consult to the week after.

What BBL treats (and what it doesn’t)

BBL, short for BroadBand Light, uses pulses of light that are absorbed by the color in your skin. At Mōv we use the Sciton BBL HEROic, the newest generation of BBL.

It’s built for color concerns:

  • Sun spots, age spots, and freckles
  • Uneven or blotchy tone from years of sun
  • Redness, flushing, and visible capillaries
  • Active acne, with a specific BBL protocol called Forever Clear

What it doesn’t do is just as useful to know. BBL works on color, not texture. If your main concern is fine lines, enlarged pores, or rough texture, BBL alone won’t get you there. That’s the job of MOXI, a gentle laser we often pair with BBL in the same visit.

Is BBL right for your skin?

A lot of people assume light treatments are only for fair skin. At Mōv we treat skin types I through V with BBL HEROic, adjusting the settings to your skin at every visit.

BBL isn’t the right choice for everyone, though. We’ll wait if you’re pregnant or nursing, if you have a fresh tan, or if the skin in the treatment area is broken or irritated. And if something else would serve your skin better, we’ll tell you.

Before your appointment

Every plan starts with a consult and a VISIA skin scan. VISIA photographs the layers of your skin and shows sun damage and redness that aren’t always visible in a mirror. It helps us build your plan, and it gives you a baseline to compare against later.

In the few weeks before your treatment:

  • Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning
  • Pause retinol in the treatment area
  • Skip waxing in the treatment area

We’ll go over anything specific to you at your consult.

During: what BBL actually feels like

Most sessions take about 30 minutes. You’ll wear eye protection for the whole treatment.

With each pulse of light you’ll see a bright flash and feel warmth and a quick snap, a lot like a rubber band. Most people find it very tolerable, and due to HEROic technology, it’s one of the most comfortable intense pulsed light devices on the market. Because the HEROic lets us fine-tune each pass, we can adjust as we go based on how your skin is responding.

When it’s done, you walk out and go about your day.

After: your skin, day by day

The short version: most brown pigment will darken and then fade away. If we treated any red capillaries or small blood vessels, they can be extra red or pink for a few days. Here’s what that looks like.

Day of treatment. Your skin may look pink and feel warm for a few hours. Most people go right back to work or errands.

Days 1 to 3. Treated brown spots look darker than they did before. That’s the pigment coming to the surface, and it’s exactly what should happen.

Days 4 to 7. The darker spots start to flake and fade. Let them come off on their own. No picking or scrubbing.

After the spots clear. Your skin looks clearer and more even over the next few weeks. This is when people tend to notice the difference, and when your next session gets scheduled if you’re doing a series.

How to care for your skin after BBL

What you do in the week or so after BBL protects your results. Here’s what we ask:

  • Stay out of the sun for 7 to 10 days.
  • Keep the heat down. No sauna, steam room, hot yoga, or anything else that heats your face.
  • Skip actives. No retinol, vitamin C, or AHA and BHA acids until your skin has settled.
  • Keep your routine simple. Stick to your Mōv post-care kit.
  • Wear mineral SPF 50.
  • Need more moisture? CeraVe baby moisturizer is a gentle pick.
  • Treated your body? Add SPF plus UPF clothing.

A few extras we love: a big hat, SPF on hand to reapply through the day, and saving dog walks and outdoor time for early morning or evening, when UV is lower.

How results build over a series

BBL isn’t a one and done. Each session clears more pigment and redness, so results build over a series. Your exact number depends on your skin, your lifestyle, and your goals, and we’ll map it out together at your consult.

After your series, maintenance sessions keep new sun damage from settling in. Your VISIA scans let you see the change over time, not just in the mirror.

BBL alone, or with MOXI?

If color is your main concern, BBL on its own may be all you need. But most skin has more than one thing going on.

BBL treats color: brown spots, sun damage, and redness. MOXI treats texture: fine lines, pores, and rough patches. Pairing them in the same appointment treats both at once, which is why it’s our most recommended combination. Most people consider MOXI a minimal downtime procedure, but we don’t recommend any important events within the week after treatment. Tiny spots called MENDs appear and feel like sandpaper, then shed over 5 to 7 days to reveal glowing skin underneath. Learn more about MOXI here.

If you’re not sure which you need, that’s exactly what the consult is for.

BBL questions we hear most

Does BBL hurt?

Most people describe it as warmth and a quick snap, like a rubber band. Some even say it feels like a hot stone massage. It’s very tolerable.

Is there downtime?

Very little. Your skin may be pink for a few hours, and treated brown spots darken before they flake and fade over the following days. If we treated redness or small blood vessels, those areas can stay extra red or pink for a few days. Most people go right back to their day.

Can I wear makeup after BBL?

Yes! And keep your routine simple: your Mōv post-care kit and mineral SPF 50.

Does BBL work on darker skin?

At Mōv we treat skin types I through V, with settings customized to your skin at every visit. We recommend a consultation for darker skin types to evaluate what is best for you.

How many BBL sessions will I need, and how long do results last?

Most people do a series of 3 to 6 (depending on their skin needs), then maintenance 2 to 3 times a year. Results last longer when you protect them: daily SPF and maintenance sessions keep new sun damage from undoing your progress. We’ll give you a clear plan at your consult.
